BIOGRAPHY
Teatro Sotterraneo is a theatre collective set up in Florence in 2004. Over the years, they produce several shows staged in major national and international theatres and are awarded with many awards, amongst which “Lo Straniero” and “UbuSpeciale” prizes, the “Hystrio-Castel dei Mondi” prize, the “Silver Laurel Wreath Award” at Mess Festival of Sarajevo, the “BE Festival 1st Prize” at the Be Festival of Birmingham. In 2012, Teatro Sotterraneo directs “Il signor Bruschino” by Gioachino Rossini for the Rossini Opera Festival. In 2013 the collective undertakes a two-year research process called “Daimon Project”.Valters Sīlis (1985) graduated in stage directing in 2012 and has been working both with small independent theaters (Dirty Deal Teatro, Theatre Ģertrūdes ielas teātris) and important structures such as the National Theatre of Riga. He is one of the most promising directors of his generation. He has the outstanding ability of putting together documentary material, historical reflections and deep acting. In 2009 he received the Spēlmaņu nakts prize for best children’s show with About Moms and he was awarded the prize for best latvian author thanks to “All my presidents” (2011) and Leģionāri (2012). The latter was presented in Santarcangelo dei Teatri’s 2012 edition.
Valters Sīlis, born 1985, graduated in stage directing at the Latvian Academy of Culture in 2010 and became widely known in 2011 with his performances in three different theatres in Latvia focusing on painful events in Latvia’s history. Sīlis currently stages Latvian classics and contemporary plays at the Latvian National Theatre and also continues to test and push his skills as director and performer on smaller stages of independent theatres.
