In 1995 was published a fragment of “The Italian is a thief” of Pier Paolo Pasolini, published in a book of “New Current”. It is the only track to release a multilingual poem caraterized by a strong political connotation and experimental allure.
“The Italian is a thief” seems to be defined, especially from a stylistic and thematic point of view, as one of the antecedents, and the most direct representative of the needs expressed by the author in “Boys of life” and in some ways even in the “Ashes of Gramsci”.
This work, which has occupied Pasolini in a back of crucial years, is certainly a representative witness of the poetic season fifties, both in the context of the work of Pasolini, and in that of history cultural and literary policy in which it is used (for opening the representation of the working classes, and the tendency to narrative).
Without wishing to fail of wealth emanating from retrieved papers of Pasolini’s laboratory, this presentation of The Italian thief is not meant to be a reduction, but rather try to return the fervor and the complexity of a writing a thought and language that were then becoming system and vision. It tries to illuminate the theatrical virulence that seems to pulsate under the line of poetry: a dramatic violence called into question by the tragic sense of the work: an earthquake that separates, as the fault line the opposing plates, two boys in the summer of their early adolescence; an earthquake that despite having the Venetian epicenter, has the whole of Italy as a horizon.
It is a presentation that mediates this complexity by comparing the different versions of the text and illustrating the laboratory of Friulian poet, to facilitate a more complete understanding of the historical and literary context and poetic object, before leaving the free language to break the dikes, trample the ear like a river that carries with it the recent transformations and old pain, and capable of digging with his unstoppable power unheard of Karst in the heart and mind of the listener.
The editorial that reads the Meridiano Mondadori in particular (which is what we will use for the staging), has the advantage of presenting the general structure of the work and the author’s poetic intentions: in particular are relevant the presence of the voices of the characters – Dino and Dino ‘s mother; the choir – the figure of a community, of all mothers who over the centuries and everywhere mourn the pain of the loss of children . “The Italian is a thief” seems to fit rightly among the many findings of the poetry of Pasolini’s unfinished, and it appears to take, if you want to use the definition that the Petroleum gave Stefano Agosti, the characters of ” it is an interminable work because of its internal structural reasons to its constitution.”
BIOGRAPHY
Anagoor was founded in Castelfranco Veneto, Italy, in 2000, by Simone Derai and Paola Dallan soon followed by Marco Menegoni, Moreno Callegari, Serena Bussolaro and many others, thus making this project the experience of a collectivity.
In 2008 Anagoor was nominated for Premio Extra for the performance Jeug* and, the following year, Tempesta received a special mention for Premio Scenario.
In 2010 Anagoor was finalist at the Premio Off of Teatro Stabile del Veneto, while in 2011 became part of the Fies Factory project and of the international network Apap (advancing performance arts project).
Between 2010 and 2011 the group worked on an articulated cluster of performances around Mariano Fortuny’s heritage. This project led to a main performance, Fortuny, which was then invited to the Venice Biennale directed by Alex Rigola, while they toured with Tempesta all around Italy, UK, Denmark, Portugal and France.
In 2012 Anagoor premiered L.I. Lingua Imperii and the concert-movie Et manchi pietà about the life and the art of Italian Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi.
In 2013 Anagoor was awarded with the HYSTRIO – CASTEL DEI MONDI prize.
The company worked for the first time on the direction of an opera: Il Palazzo di Atlante (1642), music by di Luigi Rossi, lyrics by Giulio Rospigliosi, which debuted at the 63rd edition of the Sagra Musicale Malatestiana in Rimini, Italy. Simone Derai won the the Jurislav Korenić award – best director for L.I. lingua Imperii – at the MESS Festival 2013, Sarajevo.
In June 2014 Anagoor debuted with Virgilio Brucia at Colline Torinesi Festival in Turin, Italy. This new creation is hosted also at Romaeuropa Festival.
In 2015 the Napoli Teatro Festival Italia honors a focus entirely dedicated to Anagoor, hosting both LI Lingua Imperii and Virgilio Brucia. Lingua Imperii is presented at the Venice Biennale and is among the winners of the Music Theatre NOW 2015 award – worldwide competition for new Opera and Music Theatre. Santa Impresa, written by Laura Curino, Anagoor and directed by Simone Derai, premieres in Turin and is a production of Teatro Stabile di Torino | National Theatre.
In January 2016 Virgilio Brucia is presented at PiccoloTeatro di Milano, Teatro d’Europa.
